PANGNIRTUNG, Nunavut - Emergency officials in Nunavut say utility workers are hoping to restore full power to Pangnirtung after a fire damaged the community's power plant last week.

Nunavut Emergency Management says in a news release that a generator was scheduled to arrive in the Baffin Island community on Sunday afternoon.

It says technicians with the Qulliq Energy Corporation hoped to have it installed and connected to the community's main feeder lines by the late evening.

Residents in the Baffin Island hamlet have been getting power on four-hour rotations since the fire on Thursday.

The daytime temperature in Pangnirtung hovered around —10C over the weekend, and warming centres were set up in schools.

The news release says a local state of emergency will remain in effect until full power is restored.
