CBC News has learned that an officer of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, who was at the scene of the fatal shooting earlier today in Mitchells Brook, NL, was there to investigate an alleged threat against Premier Paul Davis.

The officer is a member of the premier's personal security detail, which provides protection to Davis and also investigates threats against him.

When contacted, the premier's office said it won't comment because it's an active police investigation.

At this time, neither the RCMP nor the RNC have responded to requests for comment on this information.

59-year-old man dead

In a release, RCMP said a member of the RNC was in the community in St. Mary's Bay around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, following up on inquiries for an investigation.

During that inquiry, police said a shooting occurred, and a 59-year-old man was confirmed dead at the scene.

Holyrood RCMP, along with the major crimes unit and the forensic identification unit, are investigating.

The man's identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
