RCMP responded to a call at 2:30 p.m. AT Sunday. The body was wrapped in a blanket and placed at the side of the church.
"We had a citizen that called us that discovered what is a deceased baby outside the church," said RCMP Cpl. Martin Roy. "It's a very small baby, so who knows where the baby would have been born.
"Hopefully the public will be able to give us a little bit more information if people know something. So, I mean, we'll take any tips we can get."
An autopsy is being conducted in Halifax on Monday.
Roy said he hopes the autopsy would also provide investigators with some clues.
RCMP expressed concern the mother may require medical assistance, and has encouraged anyone who may have been involved to reach out to authorities.
