Gwyneth Paltrow Accepts Food Challenge, Makes The Internet Angry

Gwyneth Paltrow Lives Off Food Stamps For A Week, Sparks Outrage Online

Gwyneth Paltrow just can't win... or can she?

The actress, who was nominated to take the #FoodBankNYCChallenge by her friend and NYC Food Bank board member Mario Batali, caused a commotion on Twitter after posting a photo of her groceries for the week.

With her $29, Paltrow picked up seven limes, a bundle of lettuce, cilantro, green onions, corn, tomato, onions, peas, eggs, beans and whole grain rice. It's a far cry from the pre-packaged goods typically purchased with food stamps.

Minutes after posting her purchase on Twitter, readers' comments began flooding in — and they weren't impressed.

But on the other hand, Paltrow, who once famously said she'd "rather smoke crack than eat cheese from a can," is actually bringing a lot of attention to a cause that aims to show how limited resources are for families on food stamps.

And while the Twitterverse is chirping with some not-so-nice comments about the Oscar-winning actress, we're taking on a similar challenge ourselves. Over the next five days, three HuffPost Canada employees will be consuming only $1.75 worth of goods per day as part of the Live Below The Line Challenge, a fundraising effort designed to bring global awareness to the 1.2 billion people who are living in extreme poverty.

And like Gwyneth, we aren't relying on packaged goods either, because with our budget, we couldn't have if we tried.
