EDMONTON - NDP Leader Rachel Notley says new documents show Alberta's ambulance response times are getting worse.

Notley says data disclosed under freedom-of-information rules shows that the number of red alerts has spiked over the last two years.

Red alerts indicate no ambulances are available to respond to emergency calls.

Notley, who was campaigning in Edmonton for the May 5 election, said a plan by Premier Jim Prentice's government to cut $1 billion from health care will make a bad situation even worse.

But the government says in a statement that the NDP ambulance numbers are misleading.

The PCs say red alerts at any given time are brief, the system is able to redeploy resources to high-needs areas and no one is at risk.
