ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A cabinet minister in Newfoundland and Labrador is going on medical leave for several weeks, prompting a minor portfolio shuffle.

Premier Paul Davis says Susan Sullivan is attending to a medical issue and has temporarily stepped down as minister of education and early childhood development.

Davis will assume the role of acting minister responsible for the status of women.

Deputy premier Steve Kent, who also serves as the health minister, becomes acting minister responsible for the government purchasing agency.

Natural Resources Minister Derrick Dalley will lead education and francophone affairs.

Sandy Collins, who is the child, youth and family services minister, will head the Early Childhood Development Department.

The appointments took effect Tuesday.
