Two men from Richmond, B.C. were fined for careless driving after they drove their new cars off a cliff in Victoria, B.C.
Police were called to Clover Point around 1 a.m. Friday after a witness saw two speeding cars drive off the road and onto the rocks 12 metres (40 feet) below, said Const. Mike Russell in a news release. The onlooker said the vehicles were going too fast to stop or turn in time when they came to a curve in the hill.
Emergency crews pulled the two drivers and one passenger back up to the road. All three people were unhurt, but the drivers' wallets took a big hit — the 2015 Ford Mustang and 2014 Infinity Q50 were both written off.
The estimated cost of both cars is more than $70,000.
The drivers, both 20, were handed tickets for driving with without due care and attention with a fine of $368 each, said police.
“If the tide wasn’t low, they could have ended in the water,” Russell told the Times Colonist. “There’s so many possibilities and none of them end well at all.”
Investigators ruled out impairment as a factor in the crash, but they believe speed played a contributing role, said Russell.
