What Dietitians Would Eat At Tim Hortons

9 Things Dietitians Would Eat At Tim Hortons (Sadly, No Doughnuts)

For Canadians who loves their Double-Double with a side of something sweet (a Timbit, perhaps), Tim Hortons is basically part of your morning ritual.

In the past few years, the chain has focused on sandwiches, hot soups and wraps and other items for people who want more than just breakfast. But when we're faced with quick lunch or dinner ideas from Tims, it's not always easy picking out food that's high in fibre and protein, but low in sugar and salt. One of the dietitians mentioned below says she found it difficult to find dishes that were low in sodium at Tim Hortons all together.

Of course, a dietitian or nutritionist won't ever suggest eating a doughnut or buttery croissant for lunch, but if they had to choose, they may consider some of the options below.

"Most fast food outlets carry foods that are often highly processed and are by no means a replacement for good, old-fashioned home cooked meals," advises Stefania Palmeri, a registered dietitian based in Toronto.

We asked dietitians this week to pick out what they would consider a balanced and healthy meal at the coffee chain. Choices range from breakfast items to wraps and soups — so we hope there is something for everyone on this list. What do you order at Tims when you're trying to stay healthy? In our series The Dietitian Dish, we ask Canadian dietitians what they would recommend as breakfast, lunch or dinner options at specific fast food and chain restaurants in the country. Please note, none of the dietitians below are associated with the restaurants we choose. Which restaurant would you like to see us tackle next?
