Montreal Rental Home Left A Chaotic Mess

The 79-year-old owner of a Montreal apartment was left with a $38,000 bill to fix and clean up a unit after a tenant left it a chaotic mess, according to a YouTube video released Tuesday.

A video posted to the site by the Corporation des propriétaires de logements locatifs (CORPIQ), an organization representing owners of rental properties, shows a unit so messy there's hardly any room in which to walk.

The video shows mould on the walls, a black toilet bowl and trash covering almost every inch of the floor and the kitchen counters.

It carries a message saying that homeowners in Quebec are the worst-protected in the world.

In Quebec, landlords are not allowed to ask for deposits when renting out their homes, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

CORPIQ is circulating the video in an effort to gather signatures for a petition that calls on the provincial government to allow property owners to demand them from tenants.

Its effort comes just a week after an Airbnb rental in Calgary was left with as much as $75,000 in damage when the property was ransacked while it was being rented.
