He led the Calgary Flames to their first playoff appearance since 2009.
For that, and other achievements, Bob Hartley has been named a finalist for the Jack Adams Award, for the coach who has "contributed most to his team's success."
Hartley was hired as the Flames' coach in 2012 after stints behind the bench for the Atlanta Thrashers and the Colorado Avalanche, with whom he won a Stanley Cup in 2001.
His latest season in Calgary saw the team make the playoffs and advance to the second round against the Ducks after beating the Vancouver Canucks in six games.
Hartley has overseen the Flames as they lead the NHL in blocked shots (1,557) and sit among the league's best late-game teams, said a news release.
This is his first Jack Adams nomination.
Nashville's Peter Laviolette and New York's Alain Vigneault are the other finalists.
