Celebrities who not only strut — but own — the red carpet at every single Academy Awards or Golden Globes have become style icons because of their seemingly effortless ability to look absolutely fabulous at every event. But how do they do it? What drives their ability to see fashion not only as the clothes they wear but also as the attitude they embody? Here’s what they have to say:

Jennifer Aniston remains a public icon long after the end of her Friends heyday (sorry, Ross) because she radiates an endearing kind of natural beauty. And that natural look isn’t just hype; Aniston subscribes to many holistic beauty and living techniques and beliefs. She also tries to keep her beauty products as simple as possible, preferring to go with as little makeup as possible — and sometimes none at all. She’s become a new sort of icon, the poster girl of holistic living in North America, saying that going makeup-free for a recent film was “So dreamy and empowering and liberating.”

Rihanna’s confident, ever-changing and eclectic style has made her a legend in the fashion world. Last year, she received the 2014 Fashion Icon Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America—from none other than the ruling queen of the fashion industry, Vogue editor Anna Wintour. RiRi’s message at the awards? Pave your own way. “There are rules, but rules are made to be broken.” In accepting the award, she said that she often used fashion as a shield, growing up in Barbados. "Fashion has always been my defence mechanism."

Mention someone who rarely ever makes a fashion misstep, whether on the red carpet or walking the streets of New York, and you’re likely talking about Sarah Jessica Parker. Coveted by designers from Louis Vuitton to Oscar de la Renta, SJP somehow manages to maintain a balance—she is able to appear at an event as a sleek, well-dressed diva one day and a fashion-forward mom taking her children to school the next. But despite having top style houses clamouring to create her attire, she continues to hold vintage close to her heart. As she told Glamour magazine, “I still believe in thrift stores: It’s the one place you can be assured of finding something very unique.”

J-Lo has rocked those famous curves for several decades now — and figuring out what works for her body has meant she consistently pushes the envelope while managing to outfox legions of less bodacious A-listers. One of her tips? Don’t be afraid of high-waisted skirts or other clothing that you might not initially be comfortable in. “They have a classic glamour. People think you have to be super-tall and super-skinny to wear them, but I'm neither of those things! No matter what your body type, if you belt it so your waist is really accentuated, you can pull it off."

Since her start as a model and actress to superstardom as the host of Project Runway, this German-born beauty has had always had a strong sense of fashion. But equally important is passing that sense on to her four offspring, she told People magazine. "We have a rule in the house. Rule No. 1 is always to look cool, and rule No. 2 is don't forget about rule No. 1. We have other rules ... but the No. 1 rule is to always look cool."

This red-headed fashion industry darling can do no wrong. At 54, she just won an Oscar for her performance in Still Alice, and by all accounts, even her own, she looks better than ever. Style, for Moore, has been an evolution. "My style has gotten better, hopefully,” she told Harper’s Bazaar this year. "It's like everything—practice makes perfect. There was one year when my kids were little, and every time I was photographed, I was wearing a pair of cargo shorts, a T-shirt, and a bandanna. It was so bad, my publicist was like, 'Get it together!'"

From her pearl-encrusted $150,000 Calvin Klein gown at this year’s Oscars to Christian Dior Couture worn at the 2014 BAFTAs, this Mexican-born beauty has catapulted onto almost every best-dressed list since 12 Years a Slave was released. Yet she told Glamour magazine that values instilled in her as a child taught her that beauty comes from within. “To rely on the way you look is empty. You're a pretty face—and then what? Your value is in yourself; the other stuff will come and go. We don't get to pick the genes we want. There's room in this world for beauty to be diverse.”
