How To Grow Broccoli At Home

Tips For Growing Broccoli At Home

With every passing year, the price of your favourite foods rise, according to Statistics Canada. It's enough to make you wish you could just grow these foods yourself — and of course, now that's it warmer out, you can!

In the video above, Growing Wisdom takes you out to the garden to get a closer look at a broccoli plant. Gardener Dave Epstein explains that broccoli is actually a flower which makes a beautiful addition to a spring garden.

When growing a beautiful stalk of broccoli, it is best to begin with seedlings early in the season, Epstein says. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, broccoli is a cool-weather crop that can grow in temperatures as low as 4 degrees Celcius.

But if you're a beginner, you might want to start with something a little more substantial. The gardening experts at Sheridan Nursaries recommend picking up pre-grown vegetables that can be re-potted in May.

Just be sure to give those leaves a good look through. When purchasing pre-grown broccoli, you should avoid picking up plants that have already started to bloom, as this causes the plant to grow under stress and mature too soon, Epstein explains.

Once you have checked your plant, it's as simple as transferring the flower to fresh soil and an open space under the sun, according to the gardening centre at Cornell University.
