TORONTO - Ontario has announced its latest target in the province's drive to reduce greenhouse gas pollution.

The province has already set a goal of cutting emissions of the gases blamed for global warming by 15 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020, and 80 per cent by 2050.

It announced Thursday that it has now set a target to be achieved by 2030, of a 37-per-cent reduction below 1990 levels.

Ontario says it's the first province to set a 2030 target.

The province recently announced a cap and trade program to limit the main sources of greenhouse gas pollution.

Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard said in a speech to the Ontario legislature on Monday that the two provinces are leading the fight on climate change.
