SYLVAN LAKE, Alta. - Inspectors say they intercepted a boat carrying invasive mussels before the craft made it into a popular central Alberta recreational lake.

The discovery on the long weekend near Sylvan Lake was made during a mandatory inspection.

Officials say the boat's owners co-operated fully.

Albertans are being reminded to clean, drain and dry their boats to prevent mussels from getting into the province's aquatic ecosystems.

The province estimates an infestation could cost Alberta more than $75 million a year in damage to infrastructure and lost recreational opportunities.
