EDMONTON - Alberta's New Democrats are apologizing for invitations to Sunday's swearing-in that included a link to a donation request.

The NDP says on its website it shouldn't have mixed a fundraising appeal with a publicly funded event.

Incoming premier Rachel Notley said this week that the swearing-in of the new government at the legislature was going to be a family-friendly event.

The party sent invitations to its members and asked that they RSVP.

The reply option directed them to an online request for donations of up to $2,500.

The party's acting provincial secretary says she has put an end to the fundraiser and removed the information from the Internet.

"This was a serious mistake, conduct we committed to end during the campaign," Mary McLean said Friday in a statement.

"I have directed that there be no repetition of fundraising appeals that refer to publicly funded events in this way."
