Mom Maha Al Musa Won't Stop Breastfeeding Until Her 6-Year-Old Is Ready

Australian Mom Says Breastfeeding Her Six Year Old Is Normal

Australian mom and breastfeeding advocate Maha Al Musa says she will proudly nurse her six-year-old daughter anywhere and anytime she wants.

“She says to me, ‘Mommy milkie.’ I could be in the middle of doing something or talking and it’s so natural to us, we don’t make a big deal of it,” Musa said in an interview.

A photo of the 52-year-old mom breastfeeding her daughter Aminah at a local park was recently featured in the June issue of Australian weekly Woman’s Day. Musa believes in responding to her daughter’s “natural desires” and will not stop breastfeeding until her daughter is ready, which she predicts will be around age 8.

The mom-of-three, who openly posts photos of herself breastfeeding on Facebook, argues that nursing at this age is completely normal. “Let child and mother choose what's best for them, their circumstance and family,” she wrote on Facebook. “If we are all choosing then we are all equal.”

She later added: “4-8 [years] is NORMAL age for self-weaning.”

Musa is a strong believer in the power of her breast milk, which is why Aminah has not been immunized.

Aminah told Woman’s Day that her mom’s breast milk tastes like “candy canes.” In regards to breastfeeding at her age, she says: “It’s my favourite thing to do when I’m not at school. More kids should, because it’s good for you.”

While extended breastfeeding has a certain stigma, Musa’s Facebook page has a ton of support. One user wrote, “With the breast feeding thing people having issues about – I don't understand – it is a natural part of life!”

Another agreed, saying: “Breastfeeding a toddler is absolutely wonderful and so natural! Viva la vida! Love your wonderful picture Maha! God bless you!”

Because of her breastfeeding beliefs and practice, Musa has been featured on The Discovery Channel’s Extreme Breastfeeding series.
