Gay Student Lays The Smack Down With Awesome Yearbook Quote

No Gandhi quote for this gay feminist activist!

With graduation comes a chance to make your mark with an inspiring yearbook quote.

You could choose a famous source of inspiration, like Gandhi or Nelson Mandela.

Or you could do what Caitlyn Cannon did.

The 17-year-old graduate from California's Oak Hills High School did away with all cliches and chose a quote that will stand the test of time.

Her friend tweeted it on Monday, and it drew almost 6,500 re-tweets as of Thursday morning.

Cannon told The Huffington Post that she was "tired of seeing the same old quotes from popular books and movies and authors, and I wanted to call attention to a problem that women face."

She saw a similar quote on Tumblr and changed it so that it came from a woman's perspective.

The quote has generated a mixed response, with some denying the wage gap exists, and others outright supporting her.

It certainly seems to have been easier for Cannon to publish her quote than it was for Blair Gaboury, a gay student from Denis Morris High School in St. Catharines, Ont.

Gaboury wanted to print the words, "it's brighter outside of the closet" in his yearbook, but he said it was initially denied by the school's administration, the St. Catharines Standard reported.

The quote was reinstated, but Gaboury was also suspended for three days after writing about its rejection on social media.

Cannon, meanwhile, seems to have enjoyed a fonder experience with her yearbook.Perhaps the wage gap will be a thing of the past when her 10-year class reunion comes around.
