Surrey bans outdoor fires, cancels burning permits until further notice

The City of Surrey has banned all outdoor fires and cancelled all burning permits until further notice due to the dry, spring conditions.

Fire Chief Len Garis says it's simply too dry to have open flames anywhere in the city and last month, the fire department responded to 86 brush fires.

"We've done a lot of work over the last few years to make sure that the forests are as fuel-free as possible, but also maintaining the pristine parts of that," he said. "So now it's up to the general public to be cautious."

Although charcoal barbecues are prohibited, Garis says people can still use propane barbecues.

If you're caught having a fire outdoors, you could get a warning, a fine or be billed for the full cost of putting the fire out.
