Tammy Cook-Searson, chief of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, said in a Facebook post late Saturday that band members with chronic breathing problems would be moved south to Prince Albert due to heavy smoke.
She urged those remaining in the area to take precautions by keeping windows and doors closed.
A wildfire report on the province's website says 39 fires were burning in northern Saskatchewan on Sunday — 23 of which were in the La Ronge area.
Lieut. Cameron Harrison with the La Ronge Fire Department says many of the fires started Saturday afternoon when lightning struck in the area.
He says the fires aren't close enough to La Ronge to be an immediate threat.
