The district's elementary teachers are participating in a provincial-wide work-to-rule action announced by the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario in April. They have not been performing certain administrative duties, like booking field trips or recording student marks electronically. Typically, these electronic marks are used to produce report cards.
"I know that students, parents and guardians highly value report card marks and comments and we regret that the current labour situation does not allow us to provide final report cards this year," said Donna Quan, the school board's director, in a statement.
The TDSB would have to input 3.4 million entries to produce report cards for all of its students. Instead, students will receive a letter confirming their grade placement for the next academic year during the week of June 22.
The letter will become part of each student's Ontario Student Record.
Students will go home today with letters explaining the change to their parents or guardians.
