Montreal police are looking for suspects after a hit-and-run injured an elderly pedestrian trying to cross the street.

The incident happened Sunday around 10 p.m. at the intersection of Perras Boulevard and Fernand-Gauthier Avenue in Rivière-des-Prairies.

"According to the first witnesses on the scene, a pedestrian —we're talking about a … 72-year-old female — was crossing the street on foot. She wanted to go southbound and at the same moment … a vehicle heading eastbound on Perras struck the victim and then fled the scene," said Const. Abdullah Emran of Montreal police.

The woman was taken to hospital in critical condition, although her condition has improved and police say she is expected to survive.

Emran said a vehicle matching witnesses' description was found a short while later, but that it had been stolen and then abandoned.
