WINNIPEG - Police say an autistic teenager from a community near Winnipeg has turned up safe.

Media reports quote Nicholas Read's family as saying the 16-year-old was found far from home in Pickering, Ont.

He reportedly hitched a ride with a trucker who later called police.

RCMP in East St. Paul, Man., say the teen was located "safe and sound" late Saturday.

They say they won't be releasing further details out of respect for his family, but thanked the public and media for their help.

The teen went missing Wednesday after his father dropped him off at school.

His parents told media on Friday that he may have taken off due to mounting stress at school and in his personal life.
