ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - An outspoken member of the legislature in Newfoundland and Labrador is leaving politics.

New Democrat George Murphy, who represents St. John's East, says he will not run in the next election.

He was elected in 2011 in St. John's East, but recent changes to the electoral boundaries combine parts of that district with Quidi Vidi-Signal Hill.

That's the home district of his colleague Lorraine Michael.

Murphy says he is going to explore other options.

Murphy stuck with the party two years ago when Chris Mitchelmore and Dale Kirby left the New Democrats to join the Liberals, reducing the NDP ranks to three.
