Eugenie Bouchard wins Eastbourne opener

Struggling Canadian tennis star Eugenie Bouchard scored a much-needed win Tuesday, defeating American Alison Riske in her opening match at the AEGON International tournament in Eastbourne, England.

Bouchard, seeded seventh at the grass-court Wimbledon tuneup event, won 7-6 (5), 6-3 over her unseeded opponent.

Bouchard reached the Wimbledon final a year ago but has struggled of late, losing 10 of her last 11 matches before Tuesday's victory.

Ranked as high as fifth in the world last season, the 21-year-old Westmount, Que., native has fallen to 12th.
