7 cool tunes to make your summer sizzle

Nothing says summer more than a cool tune that swings so hard it puts a sizzle in your step. Now, any list is always going to be controversial, and we make no claims that this one is definitive, but here are seven songs that simply scream summer — to us, anyway.

Take a trip through our playlist, then nominate your favourite summer song in the comments.

1. The Lovin' Spoonful: Summer in the City

Hot town! A summer anthem for almost five decades, The Lovin' Spoonful's tale of urban grit and late night love remains a timeless classic.

2. Ella Fitzgerald: Summertime

The quintessential jazz summer standard has been covered by almost anyone who can carry a tune. But though Janis Joplin's raw-throated folk-rock version almost made the grade, we just couldn't turn our back on the First Lady of Song's soulful rendition.

3. Martha and the Muffins: Echo Beach

The one international hit from the Canadian New Wave band, Echo Beach perfectly fuses post-punk attitude with a  pure pop sensibility. So what if the beach is imaginary?

4. Public Enemy: Fight the Power

Come on! Combine Public Enemy's angry hip hop with Spike Lee's seminal summer movie, Do the Right Thing, and you get the totally fierce Rosie Perez boxing her way through a credit sequence that sears its presence on your retina. Sound and image in perfect harmony.

5. The Style Council: Long Hot Summer

Paul Weller is at his most sultry — all bare chested and languid — in the video for what is arguably the Style Council's greatest single.

6. Sly and the Family Stone: Hot Fun in the Summertime

You want funk? We got funk. And sideburns. And huge sunglasses. Summer never sounded so good.

7.Donna Summer: I Feel Love

So cool, they named the entire season after her, Ms. Summer's disco hit deserves a place on any hot and steamy soundtrack.
