An engagement is certainly an occasion to mark with congratulations — and a gift. But the problem with this particular gift-giving occasion is that the couple likely hasn’t completed their wedding registry yet, possibly leaving you in the dark about what they might need or what their tastes are like.
For a couple you know well, of course, you can get an item that will complement their style: for example, a modern vase or a classic teapot. Or honour the summer season of their engagement with a way to have fun together outside, like a picnic basket. If you’re less familiar with their taste, or know that they’ll be registering for many key items, then go classic and sentimental — for example, a simple silver frame for an engagement photo.
As for what to spend, The Knot recommends coming up with a total amount you'll be spending on the couple's presents, including the engagement gift, shower gift and wedding gift. Then, designate 20 per cent of that for the engagement present, so if you've allotted $250 for the wedding, the engagement gift will be $50.
However you go, think about gifts that represent the couple, not just one half of it, and ones that are fitting for their life together. You can’t go wrong with one of these 20 great items.
