Wildfire near Port Hardy 300m from homes, evacuations ordered

An evacuation order has been issued for about 60 homes in Port Hardy near an active six hectare wildfire that broke out Friday.

The order affects homes along Mayors Way and Upper Carnarvon in Port Hardy.

Officials say the fire is approximately 300 metres to 750 metres behind those roads.

The fire is being fought by ground crews and from the air.

Port Hardy Mayor Hank Bood says so far crews are managing to keep it at bay.

The Port Hardy Civic Centre has been opened to accommodate evacuated residents.
