Canadian Curtis Cassidy advances to Showdown Sunday at Calgary Stampede

CALGARY - Canadian Curtis Cassidy earned himself a spot in Sunday's Showdown at the Calgary Stampede with the second fastest time in the tie-down roping event.

With cowboys needing a top-two showing on Wild Card Saturday to advance, the Donalda, Alta. native finished in 7.7 seconds. Clint Robinson of the United States also qualified with a time of 7.1.

Dustin Walker of Aneroid, Sask. edged out American Ty Erickson for the best score in steer wrestling, coming in at 3.4 seconds. Erickson booked his spot for Sunday with a time of 3.5.

Sydney Daines of Innisfail, Alta. advanced in the ladies barrel racing with the day's best score of 17.90 seconds. Sarah Rose of the U.S. earned the second spot with a 17.98 — edging out Julie Leggett of Kamloops, B.C. by just .03 seconds.

Dusty LaValley of Bezanson, Alta and American Will Low moved on to Sunday in the bareback competition with identical scores of 88.50.

Chandler Bownds and Joao Ricardo Vieira of Brazil claimed the final two spots in bull riding, edging out Tyler Thomson of Black Diamond, Alta.

Jacob Crawley and Wade Sundell, both from the U.S., qualified for Sunday's saddle-bronc competition.
