There was a lot to take in during the 2015 Pan Am Games opening ceremony Friday night. What with the Cirque du Soleil, CN Tower fireworks, and thousands of athletes on stage, it was easy to miss some of the Canadian legends who were there.
Luckily, that's why selfies exist:
Team Canada's Twitter account posted an impromptu shot last night featuring some of Canada's biggest sporting names who were the opening ceremony flag-bearers: Commander Chris Hadfield, baseball player Fergie Jenkins, triathalon great Simon Whitfield, speed-skating champion Catriona Le May Doan, rower Marnie McBean, hockey's Mark Messier, man in motion Rick Hansen and beloved CFL legend Michael "Pinball" Clemons.
But, um, they left out these guys:
NBA legend Steve Nash and 2014 Rookie of the Year Andrew Wiggins! The two shared a literal passing-of-the-torch moment during the ceremony -- in reverse, since Wiggins passed the Pan Am flame to Nash, who lit the cauldron.
AND, just prior, Wiggins was a part of another meaningful moment when he lit his torch from his mom's -- Olympian Marita Payne-Wiggins. Payne-Wiggins was part of the 4x4 team that won the silver medal in the 1984 Los Angeles Games, and her teammates Dana Wright, Charmaine Crooks and Jillian Richardson-Briscoe passed her the torch.
Also spotted:
Bobby Orr! And that's wheelchair racer Chantal Petitclerc in the corner.
And last, but definitely not least:
Epic. Just a hunch, but we suspect there are many more selfies in store in the coming weeks. Stay tuned, sports fans!
