Highway 1 Six-Car Pileup Closes B.C. Road For Hours

It all started with a broken-down van, and ended up as something quite worse.

Highway 1 was closed for several hours Monday after a chain-reaction crash between Hope and Herrling Island.

Around 8 a.m., a van broke down on a hill on the left side of the road, B.C. RCMP said in a news release.

Police had just arrived to help when a second car came over the hill. That driver hit the brakes, but ended up smashing into the police cruiser.

A third car then came over the hill and joined the pileup.

Moments later, an approaching commercial truck trying to avoid the mess flipped over — spilling its load of lumber.

A fifth car then hit the debris, followed by a moving van, which also flipped over trying to avoid the crash.

One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries, said Cpl. Ronda Rempel.

She added that weather and speed may have been factors in the crash.
