Michael David Douglas ID'ed as victim of Sproat Lake boating accident near Port Alberni

The B.C. Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died in a boating accident this past weekend in Port Alberni.

Michael David Douglas, aged 39, of Langford was killed on July 11 when the boat's engine cut out suddenly and the boat appeared to lift in the air before crashing back into the lake.

Witnesses to the accident on Sproat Lake rushed to help and were able to rescue one man from the water. He is being treated in hospital for serious injuries. By the time emergency crews arrived, police say the boat was fully submerged.

RCMP divers retrieved Douglas' body the next day. The coroners service will determine the cause of death after an autopsy.
