Missing cruise ship passenger prompts search in Strait of Juan de Fuca

A search is underway for a 65-year-old cruise ship passenger in the Strait of Juan de Fuca northwest of Protection Island, Wa.

The man was on the Holland America vessel when it left Victoria B.C. at 11 p.m. PT Sunday, but was unaccounted for Monday morning, when the ship docked in Seattle.

After ship personnel suggested the Coast Guard review onboard security footage, the search was narrowed to the specific area around Protection Island, with crews from four separate surrounding areas taking part in the operation.

"The Coast Guard is working closely with Holland America staff to locate the missing passenger," Petty Officer 2nd Class Derik Schaefer at Sector Puget Sound said in a statement.

"Mariners transiting through the area are urged to keep a sharp lookout for any signs of distress and report it to the Coast Guard."
