Quebec provincial police have arrested a young man in connection with the death and dismemberment of Samantha Higgins, a LaSalle mother of two.

The Sûreté du Québec confirmed a 22-year-old was arrested this afternoon.

He is being questioned by police and could appear in court tomorrow.

The dismembered remains of Higgins, 22, were found under a bridge an hour and a half from her home last Thursday, a few days after she was reported missing.

Higgins had left a friend's home on foot in the early hours of July 7, in the Montreal borough of LaSalle.

The walk home should have only taken her about 10 minutes, but she never made it.

The friend Higgins had been visiting texted about an hour after her departure to make sure she'd made it home safely.

The response she received: "Yup all safe" came from Higgins's phone, but it set off red flags with family members who said Higgins never used the term "yup" in text messages.
