Winnipeg's Chantal Van Landeghem has given Canada a surprising but fantastic start to the Pan Am Games swimming competition with a gold medal in the women's 100m freestyle.

Van Landeghem, 21, qualified third for the final but beat out American star Natalie Coughlin to win the gold. Van Landeghem had a time of 53.83 seconds, a Pan Am Games record.
