Two weeks ago, Jackie Yu, a 36-year-old wife and mother, died after giving birth to her second child.
It's left Patrick Advincula alone to raise their three-year-old son, Anderson, and newborn daughter, Ava.
Advincula said the hardest thing has been explaining his wife's death to Anderson.
"Mommy went to the hospital to make sure that Ava could come here — healthy and happy — and we were all happy. But after some time again, Mommy had a boo-boo and hurt Mommy really bad and eventually that's what made her heart stop," Advincula told his toddler.
Advincula said everything was fine when the couple went to the hospital. Yu have birth on July 5. The morning after, her heart stopped beating following a complication from the delivery.
Advincula and Yu first met in high school. They moved to Lasalle to start a family.
Just down the road from them lives Amy Archibald, another high school friend, who decided to start an online fundraiser to help the family.
"Like any parent who'd hear this story, it's heart-wrenching...You can't even imagine," said Archibald.
So far, the campaign has raised about $30,000 to help pay for daycare. The family has also received boxes and boxes of baby gifts.
"People are really chipping in. Everyone really wants to help and I think it really worked out," Archibald said.
