A sombre group of hundreds paid tribute to Colin Hill today, the homeowner shot defending his family at his own Cloverdale door from an armed invader.

"We did lose a hero in Surrey and it's hard to come across these kind of guys," Harman Bedi, a friend of Colin Hill's told CBC.

The 42-year-old father of two died July 12 trying to hold the door closed to stop an armed intruder, while yelling at his wife and children to hide.

Surrey NDP MLA Harry Bains lost his own nephew, who was shot two months ago in Surrey.

"The first thing we need to do is acknowledge that this is an epidemic... in the last few months we have (had) over 40 shootings ... we still don't have a comprehensive plan to deal with crime."

Khouri Lamar Green, 22, was charged with second degree murder in the tragic case. His next court date is in September.
