Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson DJs Pride Party

Posted: Updated:

Fresh from meeting with the Pope in Vatican City, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson wasted no time jumping back into promoting civic events.

In what's become an annual tradition, Robertson was the guest DJ at a Pride party hosted by his political party, Vision Vancouver.

Robertson shared the stage with drag queen Jinkx Monsoon, season 5 winner of "RuPaul's Drag Race," and star of the party.

But it wasn't just about celebrating the gay community.

In a speech to the nightclub crowd, the mayor drummed up support for the Vancouver Pride Society's campaign for legislative changes to protect transgender rights.

The B.C. Liberal party was booted out of next Sunday's Pride parade over its refusal to sign a mandatory pledge calling for gender identity to be explicitly included in the B.C. Human Rights Code and Canada's Criminal Code.

One of the society's directors resigned on Monday over the controversy, accusing fellow organizers of playing partisan politics.

Earlier in the day, Vancouver raised the transgender pride flag for the first time at city hall to kick off Pride Week.

The striped blue and pink banner was flown, along with the familiar rainbow pride flag.

Again, Robertson shared the stage with a drag queen — local LGBTQ activist Joan-E.
