NDP Leader Tom Mulcair hit back at Stephen Harper and Justin Trudeau during his first question-and-answer session in Montreal on day three of the federal election campaign.

"The orange wave started here in Quebec and on Oct. 19 we can complete the job," Mulcair said.

Mulcair did not take any questions from reporters after he kicked off his campaign in Gatineau, Que. on Sunday moments after Conservative Leader Stephen Harper officially announced Canada was in an election period.

After his opening campaign speech, Mulcair attended the funeral of former foreign affairs minister Flora MacDonald. He was the only federal leader to do so.

Monday was a down day for the NDP campaign.
