Almost one year after launching her gender equality #HeforShe movement, Emma Watson is now shining light on racism and sexism in the fashion industry.
In a video made with Vogue UK called "Fashion on Gender Equality: A Conversation with Emma Watson," the 25-year-old UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador speaks with leading fashion designers, including Stella McCartney, Jonathan Saunders and Bella Freud about the need for gender equality in fashion. The video coincides nicely with Watson's September cover with the glossy.
"I want to get this conversation, this dialogue happening specifically within the fashion industry to ask the leading voices about gender equality," Watson explains at the beginning of the vid.
The actress then asks distinct questions to each designer, such as "Are you a feminist?" and "What are the biggest challenges facing women in fashion today?"
"I think the fashion industry has a very big role to play. It has a huge voice and the voice can be adapted. We need to give a better message to women of all ages, all sizes and all nationalities. We need to allow women to feel comfortable in who they are," says McCartney in response to the latter question.
And even though there have been some recent strides towards addressing specific issues in the industry, Emma says there is still more work to do.
"I have seen some very positive steps toward equality in the industry. But I think there's a lot of racism, there's a lot of sexism," she says. "I'd really, really love to see a more diverse representation of women and men in any way that makes them feel empowered."
