Happy World Elephant Day!
August 12 is a day when animal lovers around the world take a moment to appreciate and help spread the word of current threats that affect these mammals. According to the World Elephant Day campaign, one out of every three Asian elephants left in the world is in captivity. And with poaching and the ivory industry continuing to be in demand, elephants are often in danger in their natural habitats.
There are several reasons why some cultures and communities may feel close to elephants. In some religions, like Hinduism for example, elephants are considered holy. And with characteristics that make them human-like — they grieve, work in teams and have a sense of self — many may feel an emotional connection to them.
But what can you do today? The campaign suggests educating yourself by watching or hosting a screening of the elephant documentary "Return to the Forest," or helping spread the word of Elephant Day on social media.
