You weren't dreaming if you thought that KFC's Colonel Sanders looked a little ... Canadian, lately.
Quebec-born "Saturday Night Live" alumnus Norm Macdonald has assumed the white suit in a series of ads for the fast food franchise, taking over for fellow ex-"SNL" comedian Darrell Hammond.
"Other than not quite looking like him, his voice being different, and his inability to cook the world's best chicken, we thought Norm was the perfect choice to play the Real Colonel," KFC US's chief marketing officer Kevin Hochman said in a Monday news release.
The fast food chain featured the KFC founder in its ads for the first time in 21 years last May. But Hammond's portrayal drew less-than-favourable reviews, Louisville, Ky.'s Courier-Journal newspaper reported.
Ex-Kentucky Gov. John Y. Brown Jr., who bought KFC's secret recipe in 1964 and then sold the company seven years later, took particular exception to the colonel's laugh.
"I don't think you make a gimmick out of somebody," Brown told USA Today. "I think they are making fun of the Colonel. It is such a fascinating story, I hate to see them tarnish it."
The new ads essentially disavow Hammond's act, and set up Macdonald as the "Real Colonel."
