A former professor at the University of British Columbia who collected bottles and cans for 25 years has left over $1 million to the institution.
Wilbert "Ted" Danner started teaching geology at UBC in 1954.
He had a routine of gathering cans and bottles that were littered on the university's Vancouver campus in order to return and recycle them. The money he collected from the empties helped create the Beer-Pop Can-Bottle Deposit Refund Award in 1989 (despite the administration preferring it to be named after him).
The bursary for geology students comes with a trophy made out empty cans and bottles.
By his death in 2012, Danner had raised $46,000 for the bursary, according to a UBC news release.
The university announced this week that Danner also left $1.1 million to UBC in his will, including another $320,000 for the award.
The professor's 2,000-piece mineral collection was also bequeathed to the university, appraised at a value of over $500,000.
Another $320,000 will fund the brand new Ted Danner Memorial Entrance Bursary in Geology, the university said.
