Canadian Actress Grills Ted Cruz On LGBT Rights

Canadian actress Ellen Page had quite the heated exchange with U.S. presidential candidate Ted Cruz during an Iowa state fair Friday.

The Halifax-born Page walked up to Cruz while he was grilling hamburgers and asked his thoughts on LGBT people being fired for being gay or transgender.

It appeared that she wanted the politician to draw the line between religious liberty and LGBT rights, and talk about laws that are meant to protect religious freedoms, but could also be used to discriminate against certain demographics, namely LGBT people.

"There are also a lot of religious people who used the bible to defend segregation, to defend slavery ... LGBT people are worried that they will directly be discriminated against," said Page.

Cruz, a Christian who believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman, said he thinks no one should have to "abandon their faith" to accommodate someone else.

“At the end of the day, what we should not be doing is persecuting people … for living according to their faith,” he said.

The debate, which ABC caught on camera, lasted five minutes before Page walked away.
