Elizabeth May: Foreign Investor Protection Deals Must Be Nixed

NANAIMO, B.C. — The Green party is calling on Canada to withdraw from international trade deals known as foreign investor protection agreements and forget about getting into new ones.

Party Leader Elizabeth May said Tuesday the agreements threaten democracy and interfere with a country's autonomy.

She said that's because they allow foreign companies to sue governments in secret for legislation they don't like.

Domestic corporations, she said, have no such right.

May is particularly unhappy with a 31-year agreement between Canada and China she said was ratified by cabinet without any parliamentary discussion.
