EDMONTON — Alberta's education minister is warning there will be consequences if Edmonton's Catholic school division doesn't deal properly with transgender rights.
Dave Eggen made the comment about a rancorous debate at a board meeting Tuesday over which washroom a seven-year-old transgender girl can use.
The student wants to use the girl's washroom instead of a washroom designated as gender-neutral.
After much debate the board decided to defer a decision until next month.
Eggen says he has been assured by Deb Engle, the board's chairwoman, that an inclusive policy will be developed.
He says a sensitive and important issue of human rights dissolved into acrimony and if it does again there will be consequences.
"I have lots of mechanisms at my disposal to escalate if people don't get their acts together," he said Wednesday.
Eggen did not say what action the NDP government would be prepared to take.
