The federal election campaign is heating up in the riding of Calgary Confederation, and a new poll has found the Liberal candidate in a statistical dead heat the Conservative candidate.

According to a new poll from Mainstreet Research/Postmedia, Liberal Matt Grant is running neck-and-neck with Conservative Len Webber.

The Sept. 14 poll surveyed almost 700 Calgary Confederation residents, and found that Grant, a Calgary lawyer, is edging Webber, a former Progressive Conservative MLA, by just one per cent of decided voters.

"Calgary has turned in to a hotbed of competitive races in this federal election," said Quito Maggi, president of Mainstreet Research in a press release.

Grant's slight lead is due to a 50 per cent level of support from those in the 18-34 age category, and among those "certain to vote."

However, among undecided voters, Webber has a bit of an edge with 18 per cent leaning toward voting Conservative.

"Turnout and youth engagement will be a key factor in this election and the Liberals' Matt Grant holds a commanding lead among those 18-34, not surprising given his youth. This generational change appeal is a big advantage in that age group where he leads by more than 30 points, 50 per cent to just 17 per cent for both his opponents," said Maggi.

The poll carries an overall margin of error of +/- 3.73 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
