Several Calgary musicians are joining other Canadian artists using music to speak out against the Conservative party in advance of the federal election.

"You're on contempt of parliament, protected by your armament ... I find your hair unfortunate! Degenerate, degenerate," sing Calgary-based punk band The Pygmies.

Their new song "Degenerate," will be released as part of a compilation of protest songs titled "Rock Against Harper."

They'll join six other bands in launching their original protest songs at a Calgary launch party on Oct. 16 — just days before the federal election.

The audience will get print-outs of each protest song's lyrics, so they can sing along, writes Kenna Burima of The Pygmies on the event's Facebook page.

"Rock Against Harper" is a spin on protest albums like "Rock Against Bush," which was released by punk and alternative bands opposed to the re-election of U.S. president George W. Bush in 2004.

Many Canadian artists have been vocal during this federal election campaign.

This week, St. John's Hey Rosetta! and B.C.'s Yukon Blonde released an anti-Harper song titled "Land You Love," while and entertainers including Feist, Dan Mangan and The Sadies have performed at a series of Canada-wide concerts under the umbrella #ImagineOct20.
