Calgarian Wins Lottery, Falls Down Stairs Out Of Excitement

Calgary's newest millionaire is Warren Mead.

Warren Mead is a sensible new millionaire. After realizing that he held a winning lotto ticket, the Calgarian went and bought a toaster, a vacuum cleaner, and a fireproof safe.

“The toaster and vacuum cleaner were for my son and his girlfriend,” Mead explained. “I bought the safe to make sure nothing happened to the ticket before I could claim the prize.”

On Sunday, Mead had returned home from hockey practice and discovered he won the $2-million, Western 649 draw from the day before, said a news release from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation.

Mead's first priority? Finding someone to double-check that the numbers were correct.

"I fell down the stairs trying to show my daughter and her boyfriend," he laughed.

The couple confirmed his win, but then Mead didn't know what to do.

"I just started driving up and down Macleod Trail, calling people on my Bluetooth to tell them," he said in the release.

Mead had picked up the ticket from a Shoppers Drug Mart in Midnapore; it was a free play he had won on a previous draw.

He plans to use the winnings to help his family, and secure his retirement.

“I’m going to be debt-free forever,” he said. “I’ve just gone from ‘Freedom 85’ to ‘Freedom 60’.”
