CARROT RIVER, Sask. — A charge of attempted murder has been laid against a man accused of firing a gun at two RCMP officers on a northern Saskatchewan reserve.

The suspect is facing several other charges that include counts of assault and discharging a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Mounties say the officers were responding to an assault complaint Saturday night on the Red Earth Creek First Nation when someone fired at them.

They say one of the officers fired back at a person, who ran from the scene.

A wounded 24-year-old man was later found and transported to a Saskatoon hospital.

Mario Whitehead of the Red Earth First Nation is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

RCMP have said they've asked Saskatoon police to investigate the shooting.

A report is to be sent to Saskatchewan's Ministry of Justice.
