A Quebec City hotel has shut down its hot tub after an accident involving a 5-year-old girl.

Mélody Lapointe was injured Friday at the Ambassadeur de Québec when her bottom got stuck in the hot tub's filtration system.

Her mother, Audrey Lapointe, says she suffered internal damage — and will likely stay in hospital for another three weeks.

She says her daughter started to "lose consciousness" because she was in so much pain. Lapointe also accused hotel staff of downplaying the situation.

Quebec City police have opened an investigation.

Félix Tremblay, a spokesperson for the Ambassadeur de Québec, said the hotel plans to cooperate fully with the investigation and will make any necessary changes.
